St Pauls Carnival Fringe: Inna Wi Carnival Cinema

Immerse yourself in the legendary stories, culture and history surrounding St Pauls Carnival at this cinema evening presented in collaboration with Cables & Cameras.

Featuring a series of four short films charting Windrush legacy, Caribbean and Carnival Culture and Black Britain from talented black & brown local creatives, including:

Home Carnival Queen A beautiful exploration of UK carnival culture seen through the lens of black women and expressed in dance, music and mas costume. Directed by Somina 'Mena' Fombo

HATS A story based on true events when a mother develops dementia and her daughter tries to find a suitable care home. It shows that the Windrush Generation and their descendants still need to wear different hats in order to fit in. Directed by Michelle Pascal 

Celebrate What? A 1968 BBC documentary that covered the first St Pauls Carnival. As its title implied, it looked critically at the housing, employment and cultural discrimination faced by recent black immigrants in Bristol. Directed by Colin Thomas 

Inna Wi Carnival: Reflections of a Generation A St Pauls Carnival production which joins a conversation between local elders from the founding generation who recollect their memories and all that St Pauls Carnival means and entails. Directed by Keziah Wenham-Kenyon

A post-screening panel discussion will feature local people from the Afro-Caribbean community reflecting on this year’s Carnival theme ‘Learning from Legends’. Plus a Caribbean-inspired cocktail bar, food and entertainment for the full Carnival experience!
