to Sep 27

INSPIRED Takeover

Join Cables & Cameras and guests for a takeover of Watershed from Sat 25 - Mon 27 Sept online and in-venue. You can expect box fresh perspectives and films by Black and POC creatives that provoke and inspire; from Award-winning creative and marketing professional Jay Davidson to filmmakers including Michael Jenkins (Blak Wave), The Williams Brothers (MANDEM) and Teddy Nygh (PRU, Exposed).

Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker trying to find your path into the industry, a more established creative interested in finding ways to develop your practice or just interested in discovering films by some of the most exciting creative talent out there, get involved. Over the three days, there will be a whole range of conversations, screenings and webinars that will explore Black/POC culture and talent both in front of and behind the camera and ask questions such as: how do we understand our own power?; how do we navigate and develop practices that not only makes space for us and our stories but also encourages collaborations and paves the way for the next generation of creatives?; and why is it key for Black/POC led organisations and creatives to be active in nurturing and commissioning up-and-coming talent from those communities?

Join us in finding some of the answers and raising the questions that will help build Black and POC communities and creative careers into a sustainable future. The INSPIRED Takeover will feature contributions from MANDEM, Bristol Black Horror Club, Fully Focussed and Cinema GOLAU to name a few of the creative organisations involved.

Presented by Cables & Cameras in partnership with Encounters Film Festival, Bristol UNESCO City of Film, BFI NETWORK and BFI awarding funds from National Lottery.

Cables + Cameras In conversation with Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor.

Cables + Cameras have partnered with BFI NETWORK South West for this ‘in conversation’ event with BFI Vision Awardee Producer and Writer Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor. Hosted by Adam Murray (Bristol-based Film Programmer/Writer/Broadcaster).

Joy recently produced Blue Story, written and directed by Andrew “Rapman” Onwubolu for Paramount and BBC Films. In 2019, she was nominated for Breakthrough Producer Award at the BIFAs. In 2016 she produced White Colour Black, which premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and earned director Joseph A. Adesunloye a nomination for the inaugural IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Bursary Award in association with the BFI.

Joy set up film production company Joi Productions, to focus on Queer, Black and Female-led work. She currently has projects in development with the BFI, BBC Films and Film Four.

C+C is a Bristol-based networking and film exhibition event for Filmmakers and Creatives of Colour. Its motivation is to encourage and empower independent Black and Brown Filmmakers / Creatives in the South West to tell their untold stories. Over the last three years C+C has grown from strength to strength with a bimonthly film night, which has created a platform and networking hub to screen, share work and explore opportunities to collaborate in the city.

The conversation

An all-day event that will include mentoring, workshops, keynote speakers and will conclude with the screening of short films.

11.00am - 17.45pm session
19.30pm - 10pm session

This gathering will provide the much-needed opportunity for attendees to network with like-minded filmmakers and creatives. The event targets students through to career professionals, anyone who is committed to taking part in the conversation on B.A.M.E participation and representation in the film industry. The desire is for the event to be the first of many in Bristol’s cultural calendar. Bristol does not have many or enough B.A.M.E film nights / events; we are shaping this to be a regular event for Bristol.

To increase diversity, we need to look at different models for engaging, targeting and coaching BAMEs in how to get into the film and TV industry; at varying levels and across various roles.

The Conversation is an event that bridges the gap. It opens up access to seasoned professionals who will be able to share experience, advice and guidance on operating in the film industry. The event will fill the void that exists currently by providing a window into what can be perceived as an exclusive industry.
