Cables and Cameras No Permission Required screening 2023
Cables & Cameras in Hannover kino im Sprengel / Uk session
This was Cables & Cameras' first partnership to curate and to do a Q+A in a foreign country, especially one of Bristol’s twin cities, Hannover. I didn’t really have any great expectations about what would happen regarding the event and being part of the Uk session at the Pavilion Art Centre. As being a part of the festival, we were the film aspect and were hosted at Kino im Sprengel venue. An independent cinema in the university community of Hannover. An old chocolate factory repurposed into a community cinema, I believe. They have connections with the Cube Cinema in the UK. This is where the opportunity came from. Independent cinema and independent films seem to be popular wherever you go in Europe.
So the screening was an average turn out for a Sunday session. A mixed crowd in the audience. I was told that there were mostly regular members in the audience and a few new faces. An intergenerational group of people. We got a good introduction and a good applause for being involved in the festival. The films went down well and got a few good applause.
The event was broken down into two sessions with around four films screened and a short break. Then with a short introduction to Mike Jenkins via video link, we continued with the second part of the screening with Pickney and Echoes of our Ancestors, films from Michael and Christelle Pellecuer.
The Q+A was interesting - half the session with myself in the cinema and the other part done by a German version of Zoom called Jitsi with Michael. Being translated after every question was something new, and a few questions were lost in translation. But overall the Q+A went down well. There were a few connection problems with Mike and a few technical sound issues, but it all went well.
The audience engagement and questions were very positive and interesting enough that there was a surprised member of the audience wanting to know more about the Fresh Four crew and Mark Stewart from The Pop Group band, which is the power of Bristol music heritage and culture. Overall, I would say for Cables & Cameras' first collaboration with Kino im Sprengel Cinema and the Uk session festival, it went down well.
So I just want to say a thank you to all that made me feel welcome in Hannover, especially to Kino im Sprengel team: Volker Siebel, Peter Hoffmann, Franz Isfort, Imke Rathert, Christine Schreiber, Milad Abouarjie, Gerald Stiller, DJ Micha Phonem. Also Mika Luttgens & Terry John Oculi from the Pavillon, and Frauke Krüger from Cultural Office – City of Hannover International Culture/Twin cities.
We would like to visit again to build more on the new partnership with the city of Hannover.
And thanks for DJ Micha for the bundle of records and stickers from the Rockers Label.
