Empowering the Next Generation of Creatives: Cables & Cameras Taster Sessions

In June, we  collaborated with BFI Film Academy to deliver a series of taster sessions designed to inspire and educate eight young creatives. These sessions provided hands-on experience, valuable insights, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. Hereʼs a recap of our exciting journey through these workshops:

Session 1: Showcasing Creative Spaces and Networks

Our first session began with myself , introducing Cables & Cameras work and inspiration why we set up the company. C&C is a place where you have the space and opportunity to network with creatives of colour, highlighting how supportive environments and strong connections can propel creative careers forward. The  presentation was a powerful reminder of the need for inclusive spaces in the creative industry.

Following my showcase, Claire Simmons, Talent Development Producer from Watershed & BFI Film Academy South West, took the participants on an exclusive tour of Watershed. This tour offered a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of this vibrant cultural hub, including the cinema programming office and the Pervasive Media Studio, where many innovative projects come to life.

Session 2: Mastering the Camera with Arri

The second session brought a wave of excitement as participants engaged in a hands-on camera workshop led by Arri, one of the leading manufacturers of cinematography equipment. Arranged by MyWorld and the University of Bristol, this workshop provided young creatives with practical knowledge and skills crucial for a career behind the camera. The session was a fantastic opportunity to learn from industry experts and gain experience with top-tier equipment.

Session 3: Filmmaking Masterclass with Michael Jenkins

Our third session took over the cinema at Watershed for a compelling careers talk and masterclass by acclaimed Director and Screenwriter Michael Jenkins. Participants were treated to a private screening of Michaelʼs films, followed by an in-depth discussion about his filmmaking journey. Michael shared how his identity and personal experiences have shaped his creative work, offering valuable insights into the storytelling process.

In the practical workshop that followed, Michael guided participants on how to interpret a script cinematically. He covered essential elements such as camera shots, directing actors, lighting, and editing, providing a comprehensive understanding of the filmmaking process from a directorʼs perspective.

Session 4: Networking and Professional Development

The final session was dedicated to networking and professional development. It was a packed event featuring inspiring talks from industry professionals who are making a difference in the creative sector. Prince Taylor from Latent Pictures shared his companyʼs efforts to address the talent imbalance in the industry, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and support for underrepresented creatives.

Remi from Gritty Talent discussed resources available to support early-career creatives and shared his own inspiring journey to his current role. Additionally, Jane Coulter and Jenny Duffy from The Bottle Yard Studios provided insights into the Film & High-End TV Workforce Development Programme and highlighted the exciting productions happening at their studios.

Conclusion

The Cables & Cameras Taster Sessions were an enriching experience for all involved. Each session was thoughtfully designed to provide practical skills, industry insights, and valuable networking opportunities. We are proud to have collaborated with such a diverse group of professionals and organizations to support and empower the next generation of creatives.
